On March 15, 2022, jointly organized by BIOSIM and the Consorci Social y Sanitario de Catalunya, a session on shared gains took place. In the course of this session I had the opportunity to make the attached presentation on shared gains for biosimilar switching (going from originator biologics to biosimilars).

Within the event The Future of Healthcare in Madrid, organized by Madrid Open City, an approach to a bioregion for Madrid was presented.

The key elements of the project are:

  • inspired by the cluster concept of Michael Porter and the “triple helix of innovation” by Henry Etzkowitz, based on the interaction between three elements: Administration, companies and Universities and other centers of knowledge generation
  • a bioregion is proposed based on a boost to innovation in health in Madrid
  • the objective is to set up a non-profit organization, with public/private financing, but fundamentally private
  • the idea is that the bioregion has a professional management

Challenges of the health systems of the 21st century

On October 4, 2021, at the inauguration of the Diploma of Specialization in Health Management (26th edition), jointly organized by the University of Granada and the Andalusian School of Public Health, I had the opportunity and the honor to make a presentation on the challenges of health systems in the 21st century, with the attached presentation (go to the Spanish version)

The main message is that the greatest challenge for healthcare systems is the confluence of scaling costs and the need to offer safety and quality. This dilemma is hardly compatible, unless very intensive management is carried out, with an emphasis on productivity, the efficiency of health organizations, prevention, substantial changes in the healthcare model, in the fight against waste, in a correct approach to chronic patients, in a greater role of the patient, in a results orientation, without fear of introducing incentives and, of course, with adequate information.
